Acceptable Use

Every owned system is public, and every planet on it can carry a link. These are the rules for what a system may show and where its links may lead. They are part of our Terms of Service.

What you may not link to or show

A system's name, its planets' names and tooltips, its star logo, its vanity URL, the text of a wish and the sites its links lead to must not be or contain:

  • Child sexual abuse material, or anything that sexualises or exploits children.
  • Phishing, scams or anything built to deceive people.
  • Malware or harmful downloads.
  • Any other illegal content.
  • Adult or explicit content.
  • Anything that encourages, promotes or gives instructions for suicide, self-harm or an eating disorder, a dangerous challenge or stunt, or taking a harmful substance, and graphic violence or injury.
  • Hate or harassment.
  • Impersonation of a person, a brand or an organisation, or use of a trade mark you have no right to use.

How links are checked

A link must be an https address on a public website. Every link is checked for phishing and malware when you save it and again once a week afterwards. A link is clickable for visitors only while it has passed that check.

If a link fails the check, it stops being clickable and the planet shows its name as plain text. That is all that changes. Your system, your coordinate and your ownership are not affected. Sites change and get compromised, so if a link that used to work is paused we email you, and once the site is fixed you can save the link again to have it re-checked.

Names and text

System names, planet names, tooltips and dedications are plain text. They have length limits and pass through a filter for profanity and slurs. Vanity URLs use lower-case letters, digits and hyphens only, which also rules out look-alike characters from other alphabets. Some names are reserved.

A star logo is a single image, reviewed by a person before it appears.

Reporting something

Every owned system has a report button. You do not need an account to use it. You can report the whole system or one of its links, choose a reason, and add a short note.

A person reviews every report. A report on its own changes nothing about what a system shows. Only a decision by a reviewer does. We do not tell the reporter the outcome and we do not show how many reports a system has received. Reports can be anonymous, so if you want to hear back, make a complaint by email instead (see Complaints below).

We aim to review a report about child sexual abuse or exploitation within 24 hours, and every other report within 3 working days.

Complaints

You can complain to us about:

  • content on a system;
  • a moderation decision we made, which is an appeal. This includes a link of yours that was paused or a system of yours that was frozen;
  • us not meeting our online safety duties.

To complain, use the report button on the system, or email support@charteduniverse.space. We acknowledge an emailed complaint, a person reviews it, and we email you the outcome.

What we do about a breach

These are the steps open to us, from lightest to heaviest:

  • Link paused. The link stops being clickable. Everything else on the system stays as it is.
  • System frozen. The system is shown as plain generated space with the words "Under review". Nothing is deleted and the coordinate stays with its owner.
  • Vanity URL frozen. The name shows a review page instead of the system while a complaint about it is looked into.
  • Account suspended. For a serious or repeated breach we may suspend the account.

We keep a record of each of these actions and the reason for it, so that we can show our working if a decision is disputed. If you think we got one wrong, you can appeal it as set out under Complaints above.
